Spence Kane was a consistent lawyer. He’d handled fifteen court cases and lost every one of them because all of his clients were guilty. Then out of the blue a Denver judge appointed him to look into the conditions at an institution for the insane near Junction City, Colorado.

Appalled by the filth and brutality at the Country Acre Asylum—and by the fact that some perfectly sane people were held there at the behest of the powerful boss of Junction City—Spence vowed to reform the place or destroy it.
