Daha-hen’s name in Kiowa means Man Without Medicine. Before his people were forced to follow the peace road and live on a reservation, Daha-hen was one of the great Kiowa warriors of the plains, fabled for his talent as a horse thief. But now Daha-hen is fifty-three and lives quietly on the edge of the reservation raising horses. When unscrupulous white men run off his herd, the former horse thief finds himself in pursuit of his own horses and ready to make war against the men who took them. Accompanying him on his quest is Thomas Young Man, a young outcast of the Kiowa people. During the course of their journey, Daha-hen adopts Thomas and teaches him the ways of the Kiowa warrior. But can Daha-hen teach his young student enough to enable them both to survive their trek—and the fatal confrontation that waits at the end of it?
