Mary Jane Wells trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and then did theatre for 12 years in the UK and Europe. She first came to the US to the Mark Taper with french classic, The Red Balloon. She returned later that year with a solo show, Martha, for the Annenberg Centre, toured to the Kennedy centre and the New Victory on Broadway, and the International showcase in Philidelphia where she won the Victor Award. She worked as a series recurring on BBC’s ‘Half Moon Investigates’ and narrated BBC3’s TV show, My Childhood which won a Scottish BAFTA. Her prior visit to the US was courtesy of the Smithsonian with Cuhulainn the hound of Ulster : she was then invited to join the rep company in Honolulu theatre for a year, playing Aerial in the Little Mermaid. Since then, she has been shooting, writing and voiceovering in London and Los Angeles. Her song in How to Train Your Dragon 2 was put on the eligible list for an Oscar in 2015. She also voiced the Downton Abbey biographies, 30+ other audiobooks and pops up as Josie Marks in HBO’s The Newsroom. She is the proud winner of two Earphones Awards, one Audie Award, Outstanding Body of Voice Acting Work (SOVAS) and is currently story coach on a few documentaries too.
Her own show www.heroinetheplay.com recently won both a Made in Scotland Award and Scottish Theatre Trust Award during its run at the Edinburgh Festival 2018 at Assembly Rooms. More details at www.maryjanewells.org
